2009 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers
· Comments
NAR’s 2009 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers is in print, and available for download. I haven’t done a thorough analysis on that report since the one I published early in 2008, using the 2007 report, concerning the Lessons Learned from NAR Profiles. If anyone found that series useful, let me know and I’ll try to do something similar with the 2009 data. As things get busier around here, time for analysis and blog post writing is diminishing!
This year, the report is available to NAR members in a printed version for $25.00, and as a download for free!
The education staff at Point2 Agent put together the following chart as a visual summary of some of the results of the report. They’ve also given permission for people to share this page with others. Obtain a PDF file containing the NAR Profile summary by Point2 Agent.

Your previous analysis was very useful; I used it in a couple classes I taught (with your permission-remember)…tackle it again when you have time!

Thanks for the graphic. I like what you’ve done.
I’m working with a custom design-and-build architect and am trying to get my hands on data which would illustrate the market segments of home buyers and their percentages. (Ideally, profiles such as: Value-motivated [30%], Speculators [10%], Premium buyers [15%], Green-motivated [10%] … something like that).
The NAR Profiles look like the right stuff, but I’m not about to plunk down the cash without knowing if it is or not. Plus, I’m not a realtor so I’m unsure if I could get access in any case.
So, my question would ultimately be, would the profiles I’m looking for be in the NAR book? How can I access it for my project? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi CK,
You can purchase NAR reports as a non-REALTOR, you would just pay a higher price. However, I don’t believe the information you’re looking for is in the NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers.
The only thing I could find that comes close to what you’re looking for is a breakdown of primary reasons for purchasing a home. That data is for categories such as “Desire to own a home, Job-related relocation or move, desire for a larger home” and so forth. It’s more focused on why they’re buying, not the criteria they’re using for buying a particular house, such as value-motivated, etc.
You can contact NAR either by phone or email. They might be able to point you toward other resources.
Good luck with your search!
