Malcolm,

No problem. Also, I don't mind if people use keywords as their "name" when they post comments. You're getting the link, I figure it might as well be doing you some good. The only thing I ask is that you would then "sign" your comment with a name. It's tough to reply to San Francisco Real Estate :-) if I don't know who that person is!

I know what you mean about silly comments. I usually just dump them in the spam pile.

Why a person in an unrelated industry would be "reading along" with a real estate blog is beyond me.

You'd think these folks would at least pick blogs that are either related to their industry. Well, I guess in your case, it could be someone who is interested in PA real estate. But, for this blog, it just doesn't make sense.

I was looking at a gmail tech posting yesterday from ft.com and saw the comment below (minus the caps I added to the url) and thought it seemed suspicious.

Sure enough, when I googled the url, I found the exact wording all over the place. This person took the time to manually post all over the place but didn't bother to at least make an attempt to look real.

It reminds me of those old fake posts like "Hey, I just tried out xyz and it's really great." Those used to really irk me, like we can't tell the guy posting it owns xyz.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Dirk,

Thanks for stopping by! I noticed from your posts at RealTalk that you've developed a product that helps people track blogs for commenting called <a href="http://www.domaindrivers.com/BlogCommentAssistant/BlogCommentAssistant.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Blog Comment Assistant</a>, which looks like another alternative to something like Comment Kahuna.

No problem on the link - hope you don't mind that I changed it to open in a new window. I agree, it is relevant to the post.

This is a do-follow blog except for links in the body of the comments.

Hi Kathleen and the others,

As an adjuct to this specfici discussion, we've put out a rather lengthy <a href="http://www.domaindrivers.com/BlogCommentAssistant/Blogging-Protocol.html" target="_blank rel="nofollow">Blog Comment Protocal guidance</a>

My apologies for placing a link in my comment, but I do ask your forgiveness, as it is specifically relevant in this post.

Sam - I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who deletes comments that seem to be looking for links. It's not that the comments are trying to sell something, and they're not obvious spam. But, if they can't think of anything better than "nice blog", I gotta believe they're just trolling for links!

It's especially funny when their business has nothing to do with real estate. I always wonder how they decide if this is a good real estate blog or not...

This is something that I saw start growing rapidly around 4-6 months ago and many people do get spammy. I always moderate comments and delete any that are just looking for a link.

I do read real estate blogs and I do comment, but I try to keep comments relevant and useful to the blog owner.
