Is Google Really Turning Into Big Brother?
· CommentsOne of Google’s latest toys is Street View. Now, in addition to seeing things on a map, you can actually get street-level views of neighborhoods. Sounds like a good idea, right?
Probably, unless you’re in one of their photos and it’s not too flattering. Or, you might be like the Borings from Pittsburgh. They’re suing Google because of the photos of their home that have appeared in Street View.
Most people think that by law, a photo taken from a public street is fair game for publishing. But, there have been law suits where other applicable laws have shot down the idea that anything goes.
So, this ought to be interesting. I never really thought about the possibility that my likeness could be preserved on the Internet and I wouldn’t even know about it.
What do you think about Street View? Is it a good tool for a real estate website? Do you like the concept?
Google says that they will gladly remove a photo from the system if asked. I did a search (on Google, of course) for remove street view photo. I found lots of results from a variety of websites that discussed the issue or might even tell you how to go about getting a photo removed. Oddly enough, none of the first page results was from a Google page.
Hmmm…..

One of the agents in my office thought street View was kind of creepy after seeing a photo of things in a neighbor’s garage. One thing I would hate to see is online predators choosing cute kids to go after from looking at these close-ups.

I have to agree. What do we need Street View for? From a real estate perspective, it might be nice to have photos of public areas – shopping areas, downtowns, etc. With that and the MLS photos of individual homes, you can get a good idea of what a neighborhood is like.
Other than real estate, who needs to have up close and personal photos of every street in the US?

I don’t think there is a need for street view. Not only for the reasons mentioned here, but what about plain old privacy?
After all, if someone were to see a person standing in front of their home with a camera pointed at their window, they would have a choice to close their curtains – or not.
The trouble with Street View is they don’t know who’s looking.
Should everyone just assume there is a peeping tom out there and their window/door/garage/pool is fair game?

Hi Nickie!
I know I’d hate to have someone take a photo through my open garage door.
I’ve got plans for doing some spring cleaning in the garage, but it is a place where I have an expectation of privacy!!
