Joe,

You're right - that would be a good example, so I added a couple links. Unfortunately, there are way too many pages to put links to them, so I linked to the categories, which really won't help the site's SEO, but it does illustrate the point.

Peace to you, too.

Hi Kathleen,

Yes, very true, points well taken. My suggestion would be to insert some phrased links into that very article, leading directly to your pages where you do offer SEO tips; draw your website visitors in deeper and optimize those info pages at the same time!

Peace from Toronto the Good,

Joe,

Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation.

This article wasn't intended to address SEO issues specifically. But, if you take a look at the SEO category on this blog, you'll find lots of specific information. The categories are shown in the menu just below the header image.

While using good anchor text for incoming links is very important, I wouldn't call it the silver bullet. As you pointed out, you need optimized pages, effective page names, and a whole host of other things to be in place before incoming links with the right anchor text (or phrased links as you describe them) will help improve a site's ranking.

Kathleen,

I find your article to be entertaining but uninformative, as you don't even cover any of the basic things people should do. Basic SEO such as:

- Reverse engineer your content so that it reflects what your ideal clientele would search for at Google or Yahoo.

- Name your pages carefully as keywords after the slash in URLs are important

Also, there IS a silver bullet and that is the "phrased link", which is the #1 factor in Google search results. When people link up a web page with words like "search for homes in Washington DC" or "find Naples homes condos", Google accepts that this is an accurate description of what is on the linked page, and uses these phrases to prioritize search rankings.

Hi Sam - Yes, it's true that there's a lot to it. I just go crazy when everyone starts harping on their favorite SEO trick.

Another person described it like this: It's not one thing, it's everything. :-)

Kathleen - my thought is that the algo designers design the algo to mimic human behavior. How does a human decide if a site is good enough to use? Quick load time, visual appeal, do a quick scan of the page looking for relevant information, then a slow down to actually read and follow links. The entire time, I think a human visitor is also reading, comprehending and remembering.

There is much more to it than this, of course, but if a human visitor likes the site, it has a lot of unique and useful content and incoming links (so it will get found) and has been around a while, it will rank.
