What’s Wrong with Blog Action Day?

Posted on Sep 17 2007 | By · Comments (4)

As you know, I’m participating in Blog Action Day on October 15, and I’ve encouraged anyone else with a blog to do the same thing.  But, there must be something wrong with the concept in the real estate industry.

I’ve initiated (or tried, anyway) a discussion about the concept on a couple of real estate forums.  The reaction was less than overwhelming.  It ranged from no reaction at all to comments indicating that it must be a black hat SEO linking scam.

Since I first discovered the site and posted about it here on August 23, the numbers on the site have grown considerably.  Originally, there were a couple thousand blogs reaching a couple million people.  Now, there are over 3,000 blogs reaching more than 3 million people.  The reach is calculated based on the number of subscriptions to each blog.

So, some bloggers out there were as captured by the idea as I was.  But, the lack of interest in the real estate industry puzzles me.

Got a minute to help me out?  Leave a comment indicating why you would or wouldn’t want to participate!

Just recently I created a Real Estate blog site. Before doing so, I did some reasearch on blogs about real estate in Memphis, TN. To my surprise I could only find one other agent that “sort of” had a blog in the entire city! I quickly put our blog together and am now in the process of getting it marketed so interested parties in the Memphis area can log in and give us their expertiese and opinions on what is happening locally. Which brings me to my theory about the response you are getting from real estate agents and your blog: it appears many agents do not utilize the technologies that most offices in other professions do. It is with a certain frequency that I come into contact with agents that need support or assistance with technical issues. So, I hope you check out our new blog at http://www.memphisrealestateblogger.com and let me know what you think. Please keep in mind that it is new and I’m desperately looking for comments to get the converstation rolling.

Cindy,

You make a good point. In many areas, the real estate industry is slow to adopt technology. I hope you participate in Blog Action Day. We need more real estate professionals on the list!

I think you’ve got a start with your blog, and as you add valuable information to it, I think you’ll find your readership increasing.

Best of luck!

I just started a real estate blog focusing on real estate and lifestyles in my local communities in and around Half Moon Bay, CA. I am not aware of any other RE blogs in my area. My take on it is that finding out about new technologies, taking classes to understand all the real estate marketing options that are now available, and making time in the week to work on one’s business (instead of always doing business) takes effort and discipline. Once blogging becomes more mainstream at the Brokerage level, agents will take notice and begin to participate. A good resource for you to check out work going on in that arena is from Pat Kitano and Kevin Boer. You can find them at http://domusconsultinggroup.com/ or http://transparentre.com/.
My blog is currently at mbenne.wordpress.com but will be transferred to my domain in a week or so. Your idea is great and it will take off – be patient with us Realtors and keep educating us – as Pat and Kevin are doing for me. Thanks!

Marian,

Thanks for stopping by, and for the links to other blogs that you find helpful.

And, congratulations on being one of the first to have a blog in your area! Running a real estate business or brokerage is more than a full-time job, so it does make sense that blogging in the industry will take some time to become widespread.

Best of luck with your new blog!

Kathleen
