You may know that I’ve moved recently, and I’m enjoying my new digs in the foothills of the Georgia mountains, about an hour north of Atlanta.
You may also know that I have a real fear of bugs. But, after living in the South for a while, I finally got to the point where I could kill a roach or “waterbug”, which is the euphemism used down here to avoid thinking of these large multi-legged, winged insects as actual roaches.
The good news is that there aren’t many roaches around here, which just delights me. The bad news is that there is another bug that can end up in the house, and that is the scorpion. I saw one once, before the pest control company came out for the first time. For me, if all scorpions are like that one, I’m in good shape.
Compared to roaches, who will run and sometimes fly around the house, and easily fend off the most enthusiastic beating with a newspaper, scorpions are easy targets.
The little 1″ long bug I saw froze when I came into view, waited quietly in place while I located a weapon, didn’t run out from under the magazine I dumped on its head, and was ready for the trash in short order.
It’s true that scorpions can bite, and I understand that the bite is very painful. But, I just don’t think I’ll ever get close enough to one for that to be a problem.
Now, the reason I need an entomologist is this: I was walking past the door to the deck the other day and noticed a bunch of fuzz stuck to the window. I thought it rather odd that fuzz could stick to the window, so I went to investigate. Here’s what I saw:

I’m not the best photographer in the world, so I didn’t really know how to get a closeup photo of something so small, but hopefully you get the idea.
The little thing was shaped like a shrimp sortof, with this fuzzy looking stuff sitting on its back, then curving upward. The dark spot in the closeup had some number of the teeniest legs I’ve ever seen sticking out of it. It was crawling, needless to say verrrry slowly across the window.
I have never seen or heard of anything even remotely like this animal. I’m assuming it’s a bug, therefore the call for entomologists.
Does anyone have any idea what it is? I’d love to know!
